The Monkey Wrench Gang
After tackling three true stories in a row, from Thirteen to The Nativity Story (hey, believe it), Hardwicke finally has a fictional story she'd like to tell. It has real-life environmental themes, but it is based on a novel.
Hardwick Looking to Adapt The Monkey Wrench Gang
"My project that I’ve been trying to make for a while, it’s called The Monkey Wrench Gang," She said. "[It's a] really cool cult classic for the environmental movement published in 1975 by Edward Abbey. It’s about four extremely eccentric interesting characters that are fighting to save the land they love so much around the Grand Canyon."
Lots of star power has already expressed interest, but locations may pose difficulty. "Robert Redford and Sean Penn and other people have been very excited about this book for a long time so we hope to get it made and by doing this project and going to Morocco and Italy, all over Morocco trying to find environments that have not been touched or destroyed by man. You realize it’s more and more difficult even in Morocco. There’s power lines going to every village now which is just great for the people living there. There’s trash, plastic bags, in the middle of the desert. We have messed up this land, you know, so I’m hoping to get people excited about taking care of the land."
Redford has expressed interest in starring, and Hardwicke hopes to begin filming soon. "We want to shoot it in the spring because it’s all outdoors. It’s an action movie and it’s comedy and it’s in the Grand Canyon. River rafting. So we hope to do it in the spring. I need the money so we’ll be passing around the hat."
