Didn't Jet Li promise that he was done with Asian epics, or was it only Asian martial arts epics? Either way, the actor is still moving forward with a new project that should take him back a dynasty or two.
Jet Li, Andy Lau and Takeshi Kaneshiro for Ci Ma
Jet Li, Andy Lau and Takeshi Kaneshiro have been picked up to star in Ci Ma, a period war epic that will take place during the Qing Dynasty. With the men selected, now all the film needs is Asian femmes.
Fresh off the project Perhaps Love, Peter Ho-Sun Chan will direct Ci Ma.
Ci Ma tells the story of three blood brothers and their struggle in the midst of war and political upheaval. The film is based on The Assassination of Ma, a Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) story about the killing of general Ma Xinyi.
The story has already been tried once by Zhang Che in 1973 with The Blood Brothers. Second time's a charm?
Chan paid his respects to Blood Brothers, but claims that Ci Ma is definitely not a remake.
"We want to produce a new take on the story based on human nature. For many years, I've dreamt about making a war movie, and this is a new challenge for me. We're very excited and keen to get started."
Though Jet Li has promised to retire from films such as this, he claims the film is more about friendship than, uh, kicking and punching.
