Last time we talked to J.J. Abrams on Star Trek XI the gifted producer-slash-director admitted that, though his role was only limited to producer, he may direct. He then went on to promise that the film will have an incredible story.
Since the story is still top secret, it is nice to know that Abrams 'may' just became 'will'.
Abrams to Direct Star Trek XI
Abrams has come a long way ever since he blew our minds with the first season of LOST. Having his directorial debut also be the best Mission: Impossible installment to date, M:I:III, Paramount immediately began looking for new projects for the rookie director. Something big, something vast, Star Trek prequel!
Back in April it was first confirmed that Abrams was definitely on board Star Trek XI in the role of producer. Since then the producer has hinted that he may, might, probably, perhaps, possibly will direct the prequel as well.
Though it took some small print, Variety's recent report with Viacom CEO Philippe Dauman confirmed that Abrams will also direct the project.
And he noted the studio is bringing back Star Trek in 2008 or 2009. "We're revitalizing it in a new and interesting way," he said.
Abrams will be sticking close to M:I:III scribes Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci for the Star Trek XI script. From what we have been told previously -- Abrams has not confirmed this -- Star Trek XI will concentrate on the early days of seminal Star Trek characters James T. Kirk and Mr. Spock, including their first meeting at Starfleet Academy and first outer space mission.
I will ask this again and probably a few more times in the future: Are we going to see Kirk cheat, uh, I mean pass the infamous Kobayashi Maru?
Update: It would seem that Variety got a little too far ahead of themselves and, according to Anthony from TrekMovie, Paramount may already be doing damage control on the assumption.
