When one thinks holiday films it usually comes down to semi-cheesy comedies or family films. This weekend Touchstone's Apocalypto and Warner Bros' Blood Diamond took another approach by delivering action, suspense and gore.

It just so happens that a bloody Christmas was exactly what the moviegoers wanted.

Apocalypto Takes Box Office

Not only was Apocalypto the number one film over the weekend but it was a favorite among couples. In a turnout that can only be called astonishing, 82% of the Saturday audience for Apocalypto was represented by couples. I guess we should assume that nothing makes one hotter than watching half-naked men hunt one another.

Though Mel Gibson has not been the most popular guy of late, his follow-up to Passion of the Christ took in a per-screen average of $5,747, bringing its total weekend take to $14.1 million.

The Holiday, a romance comedy from Nancy Meyers, came in as number two this weekend with $13.5 million. Starring Cameron Diaz, Jude Law, Kate Winslet and Jack Black, pic scored a per-screen average of $5,172.

It turns out that the political adventure, Blood Diamond, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Djimon Hounsou and Jennifer Connelly may have been too political. The film was only able to take in $8.5 million, an average of $4,458 at 1,910 engagements.

Warner Bros can't be too disappointed with the weekend, as their CG animation, Happy Feet, continues to hold an audience by taking the number three spot with $12.7 million.

Unaccompanied Minors also fell short. Though the film featured a strong adult supporting cast including "I got a big one" Wilmer Valderrama, the film's targeted audience was only able to afford $6.2 million.

Casino Royale took the number four spot over the weekend with $8.8 million.

Stay tuned for updates.
