The Golden Compass
New Line Cinema has taken advantage of holiday
2006 by promoting their most anticipated film, The
Golden Compass, due out holiday 2007. A year early sure, but
it's always good to get the word out.
New Line Previews The Golden Compass
Last week, New Line sent out a promotional brochure
that can only be described as extravagant. Featuring oversized and heavy
stock paper, the brochure previewing The Golden Compass
featured full-page photos and bios of the main actors: Nicole Kidman, Daniel
Craig and newcomer Dakota Blue Richards. It includes shots of a fantastical
Victorian-like world and a section on the supporting cast, producers and
below-the-line talent such as the film editor, costume designer, production
designer and director of photography.
"The intention is to tell the world that next year, next Christmas,
a major blockbuster from New Line is arriving at a screen near you,"
said Rolf Mittweg, president of worldwide distribution and marketing at
New Line. "It wasn't geared to the awards season. If it happens, that
would be nice." He said the booklet was earmarked for exhibitors, distributors
and the media.
New Line, who is hoping that the "His Dark Materials" franchise
will be their next LOTR, did the same type of early campaign
with, well, LOTR. For Fellowship, however,
early press materials were released two years ahead of the film.
New Line has been sitting on Golden Compass
ever since the release of Return of the King in 2003. With
a budget of $150-$180, the studio is counting on Compass
to kick off a huge franchise.
"There's a lot riding on the success of this film," Mittweg said.
The Golden Compass comes to theatres on November
16th, 2007.
