Know War of the Worlds
Steven Spielberg is tired of working with happy aliens [Close Encounters,
ET] and has decided to see how the other side lives-- "I gave
the benevolent aliens a couple of shots; now I'm going to to try my hand
at the worst kind." What he is saying is ET is holding a vendetta
against earth for his improper treatment. He has amassed a large force and
has come back to kick some butt. Well, not exactly; but I would laugh my
ass off if we would see ET doing a cameo role as an alien captain.

While the appearance of ET is an unlikely reality, here is some of the 10
secrets just revealed to War of the Worlds:
3. The Most Realistic Alien-Invasion
Movie Ever?
Sure, it's a movie about a global alien invasion, but who says "War of the
Worlds" has to be unbelievable? Not Spielberg. According to the director,
"It's as ultra-realistic as I've ever tried to make a movie in terms of
its documentary style... There's a lot of violence in the movie, but it
will be PG-13." The movie takes images of modern warfare from around the
world and shows how American would look under attack. Think 'Saving Private
Ryan' with aliens leading the Normandy Beach invasion.
5. No Flying Saucers. Look Out for Tripods!
Going back to the book meant overturning some of the changes made in Gearge Pal's 1953 movie. Instead of boomerang-shaped UFOs, Spielberg resurrected Wells' tripod design, with its deadly heat ray, for the alien war machines. The aliens still have tentacles and spawn noxious red weed, as they do in the novel, but "we have our own version of the ending that neither strays nor mimics the original book," Spielberg says, "so I think we've hit a very satisfying compromise."
8. Expect More Cruise-Spielberg Collaborations
According to Spielberg, "The old Hollywood blow-smoke-up-your-ass quotation is, 'Hey, let's make a picture together.' You hear that all the time. It never, ever happens. And [Cruise and I] were determined that we were going to do a whole bunch of films together." Cruise chimes in, remembering how Spielberg pitched him three possible projects after 'Minority Report.' As Spielberg says, "One was a western, which hopefully one day..." Cruise completes his sentence: "We will do together."
9. Back on Track: 'Indiana Jones 4'
Spielberg's ready to reunite with one of his most popular characters, Indiana
Jones. 'My intention was to make 'Indy 4' a year and a half ago; it didn't
work out," he says, explaining that "my producer didn't like the script
as much as I did." With a new screenplay expected soon from Jeff Nathanson,
a writer on 'Catch Me if You Can' and 'The Terminal,' Spielberg says, "I'm
hoping to make it a year and a half from now, maybe less."
