While I have been filibustering about finally writing
a review, or should I say first look, for the story by Phillip K. Dick called
A Scanner Darkly,
it seems that a Scanner Darkly teaser trailer has already beat
me to the punch. As I have previously warned, A Scanner Darkly
is an entirely hand drawn animation. But this shouldn't sway you, as the
animation is nothing less than surreal and incredible.
First Scanner Darkly Trailer
In most feature-length animation, we have actors do the voices for characters
that look entirely different from them. This is not the case for A Scanner
Darkly, where the characters look just like the actor or actress doing
the voice over. This means we have characters that look exactly like Keanu
Reeves, Woody Harrelson, Robert Downey Jr, Winona Ryder, Christopher Ryan,
and Rory Cochran.
A Scanner Darkly is about an Orange County where drugs have reign king;
especially a drug called Substance D. Because of the astounding growth in
drug use, the police now use narcs and special surveillance technology to
watch those who are deemed 'suspicious.' The only problem is that narcs,
payed by the drug control agencies, have to use Substance D to keep their
cover. Substance D is known for damaging the brain and creating a condition
similar to multiple personality [but even more messed up].
