George Reeves
No, Ben Affleck will not be the Superman in Bryan
Singer's upcoming film starring Brandon Routhe as the caped crusader. Ben
Affleck has instead decided to play the man the man behind the cape. In
Truth, Justice and the American Way, Affleck will star as George
Reeves, the man who played the role of Superman before his 'mysterious'
[suicide assumed] death in the late 1950's.
Affleck is Reeves
Truth, Justice and the American Way has been in development for
some time as it is not the most pleasent topic in cinema history. American
Way is about the downfall of Reeves due to problems with typecasting.
If you have never heard of typecasting, it is when you look at an actor
and can't see him/her passed a major role that the actor starred in [a fact
that can hurt an actor's chances for work]. An example is Mark Hamill as
Luke Skywalker. Most fans, when they saw Hamill in another film besides
Star Wars, still saw Luke Skywalker. Producers and studio execs
use typecasting and know the problems that come with it.
Today, a lot of actors are wary of typecasting and do what they can to have
a broad range of films. Will Smith first didn't want to do Men in Black
after Independence Day, sensing that people may see him as a sci-fi
space hero forever.
Even though George Reeves was considered a successful actor, his career began to fail when he could not get any
jobs other than playing Superman. Most believe this later led to depression that resulted in suicide.
Affleck has signed on to play Reeves. Adrien Brody may also join the cast to play as the detective that heads the case into
Reeves death.
