Lightning in a Bottle
Newly released to DVD is Lightning In A Bottle,
a documentary film about the blues from its origin to present day. The film
intricately weaves through a February 2003 Radio City Music Hall blues celebrated
concert, backstage performances, interviews and archived footage of blues
legends in their element.
Lightning in a Bottle
Put together by director Antoine Fuqua (Tears
Of The Sun and Training Day) and executive producer Martin
Scorsese (The Aviator, Gangs Of New York, and a seven
part film series PBS special, The Blues), this film features an
all-star line up of performers (Larry Johnson, Solomon Burke, Ruth Brown,
Honeyboy Edwards, Natalie Cole, B.B. King and Buddy Guy are just a few of
the legends here).
Starting off with a performance by Angelique Kidjo, we are graced with an introduction to the origin of the blues, music from the 'motherland'. The film then pay's its respects to the blues' American roots, field hollers, by flashing back and forth from old archival footage and concert performance. As the film continues to captivate its audience with dazzling performances we are told the story of the blues through the voice of all of the legends that set foot on that stage. Even guitar legend Buddy Guy, who is actually one of the strongest links in the old-to-new-school-blues-transition-chain, states that performing at this event was one of his greatest moments in life.
Before B.B. King, the last performer, takes the stage, the audience has been well exposed to the history and music of the blues, and of course been showed the impact that some of the greatest and most influential figures in blues (Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, Lead Belly, Big 'Momma' Thornton and W.C. Handy) had.
This documentary takes a respectful look at the one of America's greatest genre's of music and brings together some of its greatest living legends to detail the course and history of the blues. For any blues aficionado this is an absolute treasure, and an absolute must have for any ol' hound dog.
