Damien Rice
Lately I have been asking myself, "Where is Damien Rice?" It has been well over a year since he released anything, and he has given no signs of recording a new record any time soon. This makes me think that he is just busy touring, however, that couldn't be further from the truth.
Damien Rice
Damien Rice took the world by storm in 2003 with his debut album "O" and his heavy tour schedule. However, he has had amble time to recover from his tour, and being an excellent songwriter, I can only assume that he has plenty more writing to do. So once again, where is Damien Rice?
Damien Rice has been active in a "global campaign to free Burmese pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi and all political prisoners in Burma. Aung San Suu Kyi is now serving her third term of house arrest. She was arrested on 30 May, 2003 after the regime's militia attacked her convoy and killed up to 100 of her supporters."
Damien Rice has recorded "Unplayed Piano," a single that is scheduled to release on June 20th, the day after Aung San Suu Kyi's 60th birthday. His has also scheduled two solo shows with the proceeds going in support of this campaign. Kate Earl will be joining Damien on the stage of both shows as a special guest. His shows are scheduled for June 20th at the Palladium in London, and June 30th at the Trianon in Paris. However the London show is already sold out.
Rice feels the need to participate in this campaign because, "She is the world's only incarcerated Nobel Peace Prize recipient. On her 60th birthday Aung San Suu Kyi will have spent a total of 2,523 days in detention."
Damien Rice doesn't consider himself a political activist, so it is fair to assume that he will not spend much time contributing to this campaign, despite its much needed support. If she is released for her sixtieth birthday we can expect Rice to rejoice in the success of the campaign, and to schedule himself a few more tour dates. However, his fans are becoming anxious for some new material, so hopefully Rice will not make his fans wait much longer after the release of 'Unplayed Piano' for the release of his sophomoric release.
Stay tuned for updates.
