For those of you who are in the loop you have probably already heard of the countdown, however for those not in the know, iTunes is well on its way to having 500 million songs downloaded legally.

Apple Inc. has put together an array of prizes for the one who downloads the 500 millionth song, and for those who download the songs at each one hundred thousand mark up to 500 million.
At the one hundred thousand mark, the prize is an Apple iPod Mini in the color of your choice and a 50-song gift card to the iTunes Music Store.
The grand prize for the 500 millionth song download is 10 iPods of your choice (iPod, iPod Mini, iPod U2 or iPod Shuffle), a gold 10,000-song gift card and 10 additional 50-song gift cards for the iTunes Music store, four Coldplay tickets and a trip for four to one of their scheduled tour concerts and backstage passes.
The countdown is currently at 494,900,000 and counting rapidly. To participate all you need to do is download your favorite artists and songs from the iTunes Music Store; Apple Inc. will do the rest.
It looks as though Apple will be giving away five 100 thousand-song prizes and, obviously, one 500 million-song prize. If you are not already downloading from the iTunes Music Store, now is the time.
