Harry Potter theories and discussions
Disclaimer: If you have not read and finished Harry
Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, you may not wish to continue. If
you are currently in the process of reading the books, then you definitely
do not want to continue. However, if you just don't care or have finished
the latest Potter book then feel free to read away... where is the Horcrux
locket and who the heck is R.A.B.?
Upon recovering the locket thought to be one of Voldemort's Horcruxes, we
quickly learn that the locket is not a Horcrux at all, but rather a message
from a wizard [assuming] that has turned on Voldemort and taken the horcrux
long before hand. The only hint we have on this wizard is that he signed
his note R.A.B.. But who can this R.A.B. character be? Well, now that most
of the Potter community pays close attention to details laid down by JK
Rowling, most were able to easily jump to a conclusion-- Sirius's brother
Regulus Arcturus Black.
R.A.B. is Black
Though Regulus was the initial guess of most avid
Potter fans, others had suggested that the initials R.A.B. were
just another way for JK Rowling to try to throw the readers off. The only
problem is that Potter fans are now so die hard, that it is impossible for
JK Rowling to keep a lot of secret details hidden. I bet she was probably
surprised on how fast Potter fans figured the identity of R.A.B. and is
just as glad that many are still doubting themselves.
However, it does look like the theories are finally all coming to a single
conclusion, with all still pointing at Regulus Black. The good people over
at hp-lexicon
have inserted Regulus Arcturus Black into the Black family tree and mention
a few little details on why this character is the obvious candidate.
For one, we are previously told the story of Regulus by Sirius and how proud
the Black family was of Regulus for joining the ranks of Lord Voldemort.
However, once Regulus got in too deep [details still unknown] he decided
that the ways of the Death Eaters were just not for him. In Order of
the Phoenix we hear Sirius explain: "he [Regulus] got in so far,
then panicked about what he was being asked to do, and tried to back out.
Well, you don't just hand in your resignation to Voldemort. It's a lifetime
of service or death."
It is believed that Regulus was killed some time
in 1980, whether it was a common Death Eater or Voldemort who killed Regulus
remains unknown. However, with the stunt that Regulus pulled, it can be
imagined that he was dealt with personally. Now, the major question was
how the heck did Regulus have the abilities to get by all the safeguards
laid down by Voldemort to protect the Horcrux. Was he by himself or did
he have help? Personally, I think it was his job to put the Horcrux their
in the first place, something he didn't follow through with. Instead of
leaving behind the Horcrux, R.A.B. may have just kept the locket from the
beginning and instead placed an item with his infamous note to Voldemort.
Then he left the cave, set up the safeguards and went on his way.
Potter readers are also already pretty sure of where the locket
Horcrux is now located or at least used to be. We encounter a similar locket
inside Sirius's mother's house while the children and Order are cleaning
the place up. While this would be an easy solution for Harry to grab his
wand and run to a home that now belongs to him, there is another loophole
here. Mundungus began to loot the place after the loss of Sirius [probably
before too]. In Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Harry catches
Mundungus selling off goods from Sirius's house. Considering that this locket
has been seen by the occupants of the home, it should be expected that not
only has Mundungus seen the locket but has taken it in order to sell or
keep. This Horcrux could be anywhere by now, which most likely means that
Harry will have to track down Mundungus first. But wait! One more loophole!
Sorry, sorry... this is a theory for next time. Mundungus is a good scape
goat, but I think somebody else has the locket. Can you guess who? [send
emails, I do listen and respond to most]
For now, assume that R.A.B. is Regulus Black and the note is one of his
final attempts to rebel against his 'Lord'. However, did Regulus Black know
he was taking a Horcrux or just a cherished item?
That's it on the Harry Potter theories and thoughts for now, but
check out hp-lexicon
to look at the family tree of Regulus Black. Who do you think has the locket?
