Happy New Year! A Period in Review... and I Hate UPS

CanMag will continue to grow....
Happy New Year everybody!! We have just entered 2005 with a bang.... except of course for a devastating tsunami that struck the shores of various Asian countries. Anywho, here is a year in review from CanMag. To be quite honest, CanMag has only been around for about four months, so we will do four months in review... and I HATE UPS [united postal service].

The Growth of CanMag

Alexa Ratings

Our ratings seem to go up by the day and we have recently dropped under the one million mark for Alexa ratings, seating CanMag at a comfortable 746,579 position. However, we plan to get this number below 500,000 before February. Not bad growth considering the time CanMag has been running.

Google Pagerank

Considering that google only feels it is necessary to update their google toolbar once every 115 days now [compared to every 24 days before September], it has been hard for CanMag to move up in Google PR or, at least toolbar PR. While I know this statistic does not matter that much since google is always updating, it is still nice to see. And our advertisers like seeing it too. Currently, CanMag has only existed for one google update, which knocked us up to a PR of 3.

UPDATE: we just moved up to a PR 5!

Site Design

If you are a frequent visitor, you definitely have witness a lot of changes that have occurred to the site for the past couple months. The changes include switching the left bar to dark blue from light gray, and replacing the entire header of the site. I have also re-written each CSS file to have better fonts displayed on the site. Each header has had a font change to match CSS changes.

Movie Database

After writing about 180 of CanMag's first articles, I realized that each article needs a way to establish itself for the particular film(s) it was written for. I then decided to add a movie database to the site to give users all the movie information they will need for all upcoming, and older, films. The database also holds each article written for each film; making film info navigation easy. The database lists the top viewed movies on the left side bar; to see all the movies go to Movie Database List.

Trailer Database

Another realization after posting so much news about the release of movie trailers. To help our users find movie trailer links/pages easier, I added the trailer database. The database holds all the latest trailers that have been released. All trailers are put in order of when they were inserted into the database.

CanMag Blog

While these pages have not gotten a lot of love yet, people are beginning to warm up to them. Currently, the scoops blog is a top visited page, even though it only has a couple actual posts. Hopefully this will change as time passes.

RSS/XML Feeds

CanMag has had a good start with its XML feed. The XML document is currently one of our most pulled documents. The XML feed will be going through some restructuring as we polish it up and allow more articles to be listed within the feed; along with a new image file. The XML feed will also have javascript capabilities by February.

CanMag also offers IFrame pages that can easily be copied and pasted onto your site. These pages are also being re-done as we remove the abstracts, which take too much page space.

To look into each style, check out our XML page.

CanMag: A Year in Review

Here is a brief [four months] year in review of some of the favorites, and big events, that I have seen since the creation of CanMag..

Cinema Favorites

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind: Great blow my mind film.
Sin City trailer: Probably the coolest trailer I have ever seen...ever
Anchorman: Finally a film that lets Ferrell let loose.
Spider-Man 2: Joins the ranks where the sequel is actually better than the original
House of Flying Daggers: And I thought HERO was rad!

Things I missed, but hope to catch:
Old Boy
Casshern
Hotel Rwanda
Unleashed
A Very Long Engagement

Television Hot Spots

I can't say I watch television too often. However, there are some shows out there that keep me coming back to the couch. ABC rocks!

LOST: One of the greatest 'miniseries' ever.
Desperate Housewives: Where sillyness, comedy, disgust, and arousal all intertwine.
CSI Las Vegas: They are all good, but Vegas is still the best.

Games I Play

Some of the games that wound up in my X-Box or PC...

Halo 2: I love and hate this game. I think the original Halo required more 'skill'
Half-Life 2: I am back firing rounds on the Counter-Strike circuit, and I couldn't be happier
LOTR: Battle for Middle Earth: A must for any RTS gamer.
KOTOR 2: These Star Wars history games rock.
World of Warcraft: When does a Warcraft game fail?

Why I Hate UPS- United Postal Service

I believe I have only have used UPS three times this year. Actually, it was not a choice of my own but the company/person who was shipping the item. Every time I have used UPS they have been at least three days late. And, each time, their tracking claims 'ON-Time' up until the package is late. Then it switches to 'Delivery Date Changed.' A horrible program that comes with what I have found to be a horrible service. They have topped off my year of 2004 by going above the call of duty by having my last package of the year delivered 5 days late. Great service, I love it [sarcastic]. The best part is that two of the three times, the package sat in a warehouse for 2 to 3 days about 5-8 miles away from my house. I call UPS begging to pick up the package, but they do NOT allow pick-up except on the date they plan on delivering your package. HORRIBLE!! I had to wait five extra days for a package that was a ten minute drive away!

Also, do NOT use UPS around holidays either, as you have no idea what they may do to your package; especially if it is ground. My friend recently had a check sent through UPS near Christmas. After the check became a few days late, the person who sent the check called UPS to ask what was going on. They claimed that the location the check was sent to was CLOSED on their delivery date, which it was NOT. I don't know if they are trained to lie or what, but there was no mistake that the location was OPEN. UPS further proceeded to say that they will try delivering the check again after the holidays [which were not to officially begin for two days]. This meant they'd push the delivery date back almost another week. Only after strict complaints did they decide to deliver it. HORRID!

I do a lot of online purchases/sales through online retail and ebay, and have always used USPS. The service is cheap, and I have NEVER had a problem with them. They DO allow pick up from the post office and DID deliver packages on a timely manner. I know there is a myth that the USPS is horrid; this just isn't true.

Anywho, had to blow that off of my chest. ENJOY THE HOLIDAYS!!!
