Four-time Academy Award nominee Julianne Moore and acclaimed British film and stage actor Bill Nighy make their Broadway debuts in the world premiere of David Hare's new play The Vertical Hour, the first Hare work ever to premiere on Broadway. Directed by Academy Award winner Sam Mendes, The Vertical Hour opens on Broadway for a strictly limited 20 week engagement Thursday, November 30, 2006 at the Music Box Theatre (239 W 45th St) with preview performances beginning on Thursday, November 9, 2006. Andrew Scott, Dan Bittner and Rutina Wesley complete the cast. Julianne Moore received Oscar nominations for her work in The Hours, Boogie Nights, Far From Heaven and The End of the Affair and has starred in such other critically acclaimed films as Magnolia and Short Cuts. The Vertical Hour marks a return to her stage roots; a graduate of Boston University for the Performing Arts, Moore was featured in The Public Theatre’s 1987 production of Serious Money and last appeared on the New York stage in Andre Gregory’s Vanya on 42nd Street in 1992.

Acclaimed British actor Bill Nighy is best known for his work in such films as Love Actually; Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest and The Constant Gardener. Later this year, he’ll be seen in Notes on a Scandal and heard in the animated feature Flushed Away. On the London stage, Nighy was seen in the National Theatre productions of Tom Stoppard’s Arcadia, David Hare’s Skylight and Blue/Orange and for his television work, he received a Golden Globe nomination for the Emmy Award winning HBO film, The Girl in the Café.

Andrew Scott’s (Philip Lucas) extensive theatre credits include his Olivier Award winning performance in The Royal Court’s A Girl in a Car With a Man; Dan Bittner (Dennis Dutton) most notably appeared as Christopher in The House in Town at Lincoln Center and Rutina Wesley (Terri Scholes), a Juilliard graduate appeared in the film Hitch opposite Will Smith and Eva Mendes.

The Vertical Hour tells the story of an American woman - an acclaimed international television journalist and academic - who travels abroad and finds herself caught in an emotionally charged romantic triangle, pulled between the affections of her lover and lover's father.

David Hare, an Academy Award nominee for his screenplay of The Hours, is known to New York theatre audiences for the acclaimed productions of Stuff Happens, Amy’s View, The Blue Room and Skylight, for which he won a 1996 Olivier Award for Best Play. He was nominated for the Tony Award three times as author of a Best Play in 1983 for Plenty, in 1996 for Racing Demon and in 1997 for Skylight.

Sam Mendes was awarded an Academy Award for Best Director in 2000 for his first film, American Beauty. Founding Artistic Director of London’s Donmar Warehouse, his productions that transferred to Broadway from that address include The Blue Room and the Tony Award-winning revival of Cabaret; also Twelfth Night & Uncle Vanya at the Brooklyn Academy. His most recent Broadway production was the 2003 revival of Gypsy with Bernadette Peters. Mendes’ extensive work with the RSC, National Theatre and in the West End includes Troilus & Cressida with Ralph Fiennes, The Cherry Orchard and The Plough and the Stars with Judi Dench, The Glass Menagerie with Zoe Wanamaker, and Richard III and Othello with Simon Russell Beale.
