Storm Troopers March
Once you've seen ten Tournament of Roses Parades
you have seen them all. I had planned on missing the show for 2007 by either
sleeping in or hitting the slopes, but plans could change thanks to a couple
hundred Storm Troopers who are looking to invade, I mean march in the ceremony.
Star Wars Float to Appear at the Tournament of Roses Parade
Some would say this is long overdue, while others
may call it crazy. But no matter what kind of Star Wars fan
you are, George Lucas is ready to give a little something back -- other
than a refund for Phantom Menace -- in the upcoming Tournament
of Roses. The director has recently picked up 200 members of the 501st Legion,
a group of hardcore Star Wars fans whose numbers not only reach 3,500, but
they can also be counted on for showing up to major events decked out in
full costume. Although the group of fans is unaffiliated with Lucasfilm,
the company sometimes uses the group and their exact replicas at its official
events.
"When we were releasing Episode III around the world,
we'd call up the local garrison and ask them to provide some atmosphere
and color around the premiere," said Tom Warner, Lucasfilm's senior
director of marketing. "George was so impressed with these guys --
with their dedication and professionalism -- he wanted to do something to
get recognition for them."
Lucasfilm held auditions to find the top 200 marchers
in the 501st Legion and will pay for each selected member's flight and accommodations.
80% are expected to arrive as your usual Storm Troopers while the rest will
be dressed as snowtroopers, sandtroopers and biker scouts.
The Storm Troopers will find their beat thanks to the Grambling State U.
marching band from Louisiana. All 176 band members will also follow theme
by dressing up as Imperial officers.
We are already told that the band will play the Main Title, Imperial
March and The Throne Room. Don't expect the music to be exact,
however, as Warner promises a 'New Orleans twist.' Personally, I would have
loved to hear The Asteroid Field from Empire Strikes Back.
The Star Wars floats will be accompanied with Twi'lek dancers
as well.
