“One More for the Road” - Ryan announced there were 32 million votes cast (interestingly enough that is a million less than last week).
Our idols started off the night with a medley of Sinatra songs. All were sporting (even Crystal) a version of a tux. I actually thought this was more of the look Crystal should have gone for on performance night rather than the evening gown. She is not the chanteuse type. There may have been some actual live singing in this medley!
A forgettable Ford Music Video followed set to “1, 2, 3, 4”. The lime green Fiesta was the star of the video.
American Idol: Season 9 Top 5 Results
Now roll tape on what a Tuesday (performance day) is like for the contestants.
Ryan uttered those words “dim the lights”. He engaged Lee DeWyze in a protracted conversation and ultimately deemed him safe.
Lady GaGa performed “Alejandro” with some topless male dancers. Is she more about the performance than the singing? Interesting.
Behind the scenes clips were shown of Harry Connick’s mentoring sessions with the idols. (We have to fill an hour you know.)
Connick performed The Beatles’ “And I Love Her”. Love Harry, but there were some issues in the lower register.
Harry Connick and the orchestra accompanied the Top 5 in a medley of his songs. This was followed by a story of when Harry first met Sinatra on his 75th birthday. He also plugged his 11 day run on Broadway beginning July 15th.
“Bring down the lights”. Crystal Bowersox was ushered to the far side of the stage – Michael Lynche to the near side of the stage – Aaron Kelly joined Big Mike and Casey joined Crystal. Ryan asked Lee to pick which of the two was the safe group. He replied he would not.
Mike and Aaron were proclaimed to be the Bottom 2. For the last time tonight, Ryan said “bring down the lights” and Aaron would be going home. Roll his ‘Idol Journey’. Since Harry and the orchestra were on stage Aaron had no choice but to reprise “Fly Me to the Moon”. (If given the option of past performances I’m sure he would have selected his Shania song “You’ve Got Away”.)
How are you feeling about the Final 4? Next week’s mentor is Jamie Foxx with songs of the cinema. Will that favor any of the remaining contestants? We are edging ever closer to the confetti raining down in the Nokia Theater. American Idol performances Tuesday – results Wednesday on Fox.
