Pretty Little Liars already sounds like a scandalous show from the title. It’s certainly got its share of bad girls, so Shay Mitchell is happy to be playing the one good girl in the bunch.
Shay Mitchell Talks Pretty Little Liars
“Out of all these characters I’m very happy to be playing Emily,” she said. “I mean, I love the material of the writing and I’m really proud to be playing a character who many teens can relate to. It’s an important thing so I’m actually really happy to have this material to work with.”
Based on the books by Sara Shephard, the mysterious drama is a little more mature than the usual ABC Family series. “It’s going to be different from ABC but it’s a new kind of family and we’re in a new kind of world. A lot of these issues and stuff are getting hopefully easier and easier to talk about with your parents. A lot more shows you’re able to watch with your parents. Even though the things that we’re dealing with might be a little awkward sometimes, we’re all going through this. When I was growing up in high school, I saw a lot of these issues that were being dealt with with a lot of my friends, with people that I knew. So they’re getting a little bit edgier.”
The books have provided Mitchell with valuable research for bringing Emily to life on screen. “I read the books as soon as I had done the audition for it, doing a little bit of back research onto it. I picked up the books and can now say that I truly am a huge fan of Sara Shephard and her writing because they’re page turners.”
Pretty Little Liars premieres June 8 on ABC Family.
