Doctor Zhivago
The latest Warner Brothers classic film Blu Ray isn’t quite the HD marvel that Gone with the Wind, Casablanca or North by Northwest were. Doctor Zhivago looks mostly good, sometimes rough, but a solid, if not stellar, Blu Ray.

Most of the shots look clear, if not crisply sharp in focus. Some of them are, but others fuzz up a little. If you see some grain, that’s probably normal. It is an old film so if the worst it gets is you still see remnants of the filming process, at least it’s still authentic. There are some shots that haze up with digital speckles. Not too many in the four hour running time, but enough to notice.
All the detail is there in the epic landscapes ad different seasons. Snow and ice, hot summer dirt, ornate riches and desolate poverty present full frames to study in HD. The colors really pop and the skin tones match the era’s heightened oil paint-y look. These may be standard compliments for a Blu Ray, so that’s good. It’s just not special overt praise, because it doesn’t go that far.
