The Last Song
You may not think of Nicholas Sparks movies as home theater demos. Sure, they’re good for a cry, but are you really going to marvel at their high definition visuals? Well, if The Notebook taught us anything, and it taught us how to love again too, it’s that the settings of these movies are good HD.
The Last Song on Blu-Ray
The Last Song is set on the beach with a beach house and its lush colors. You see gritty detail on the sand, the pier, the burnt out church, dad’s glass shop. The hunky hunk and the young ingénue look stunning in the crisp light. Lotion shines off the ripped Liam Hemsworth and Miley Cyrus looks glorious even with her hard edged punk look. Greg Kinnear’s stubble is the classic leading man gristle you see on Blu Ray.
It’s got some visual spectacle too. The opening fire scene is like bright orange action. The street performers at night are a stunning sight. Scuba diving maintains HD clarity in a beautiful blue light. The mud is really hot. Then they hose off. Actually, this is some really intense PG-13 HD body work.
The newness of the movie rides that fine line between saturated grain and window-like clarity. That’s how new releases should look, a little better than real life and more clear than film.
