I had intended on giving my first impressions on Family Guy Presents Blue Harvest by noon today, but might have encountered one of the worst mistakes by iTunes and Fox in a long time.
(Updated! Digital File now working!)
iTunes Presents a POS
I thought I was the only one.
Family Guy Presents Blue Harvest is one of the first DVDs -- both the regular edition and special edition have it -- that comes packaged with the 'Fox Digital Copy.' While it sounds like an unnecessary bonus, the digital copy is absolutely clutch for anybody who owns a portable video player such as an iPod, iPhone or PSP. I purchased the DVD -- yes, Fox didn't send over a copy -- with the sole intention of immediately transferring the video to my iPhone for viewing. There was a catch, however, that I blame almost entirely on Apple's perfect iTunes.
The Fox Digital Copy does NOT transfer properly. I am not alone, as I have already received two emails this morning blasting the release for this very same error. Head on over to the iTunes support forums and you will find that there are a plethora of consumers unable to get Blue Harvest working with iTunes.
It sucks, and I have therefore yet to watch the Family Guy special. So, what are my first impressions?
Don't buy this just yet! Not worth it. I have yet to see a single frame, and all I have been given is frustration. Apple claims they know of the problem, but they have yet to give an announcement on how they plan on fixing it.
For now I'll just sit and wait, and hate this product more and more.
Apple and Fox should write a note to self: Make sure the technology works before releasing it.
Update: Though it took little over a day to get this right, it looks like Apple has finally fixed the Digital Copy problem with iTunes. I have now watched a good chunk of the show, movie er, special and have so far loved it. While I originally gave the DVD a score of 1, I'm a forgiver.
This could have been a 5, but minus one point for the whole iTunes issue.
