Matthew McConaughey Hunts Fool's Gold

Hollywood must have been trying to get Matthew McConaughey and Kate Hudson back together for years. When two people make one successful romantic comedy together, everyone wants their next one. But the actors didn't want to become the Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan of the aughts.

"[There were many projects] that would be a repeat of How to Lose a Guy and don’t want to do that and do that and then this came," said McConaughey. "It sounded like a lot of fun. In the same way we were looking for, anticipating finding the right thing because I wanted to get together again. I think there are definitely people out there that want to see Kate and I get back together again. I don’t know how they are going to do it, but want to see them together again in the same way as we wanted to. It was just finding the right thing."

Despite his fondness for his costar, McConaughey was quoted in glamour calling her a pain in the ass. "That’s a fact. That’s a fact. Yeah. She can be a real pain in the ass. Yeah, there's a real honest respect, but it’s really easy when you get on screen when it’s a scene about, ‘Give me a break.’ You don’t have to go mining for that."

McConaughey finds himself in a lot of tropical movies, with Fool's Gold set in the Florida Keys and the upcoming Tropic Thunder. "They just happen to be there and they're all, it's a connection to nature too. We went summer in Malibu. Then we go to Australia for six months. And then we came straight back to another summer."

Fool's Gold also took advantage of McConaughey's action hero skills. He plays a treasure hunter and makes many dives. "You don’t really fool around. Behind the camera down there, it’s almost as large of a crew as you have on land. Because every single person, she has her girl who is a great diver who is behind the camera who has an extra tank in case the signal comes up. And I’ve got my guy and everyone has their person. And then you get in an action sequence and the bubbles are going up around you and you can’t see. And you don’t have any visuals. You don’t know if you are up or down or if you’ve gotten inverted or what. You learn to hold your breath a little longer than you probably thought you could."

The actors would sometimes "buddy breathe" to be safe too. "So if I have a tank on, go down and we're slowly submerging and get to the bottom, I just pull out, get your breath, pull out, give you a share. Share the air and go back and forth. That also helps comfort that you know that if you are in trouble someone’s got it. There is a hand signal. Someone comes."

Fool's Gold opens to theatres on February 8th.
