Fool's Gold
Though Fool's Gold was verbally bashed by the critics, the romantic adventure was still able to pull in an audience over the weekend.
Box Office Champ: Fool's Gold
While I was hoping In Bruges would surprise audiences and come out on top, it turns out that the very generic, very cliché romantic comedy Fool's Gold was the early Valentine's Day treat. Troubling? Well, hold onto your sanity, as Welcome Home Roscoe Jenkins came in second.
Fool's Gold was able to take in an estimated $22 million over the weekend while Roscoe Jenkins followed close with $17.1 million.
Just when I thought I couldn't be more nauseated by the box office numbers, we are also told that Hannah Montana/Cyrus Miley: Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour came in third with $10.5 million.
Fool's Gold is sticking close to the McConaughey-Hudson formula, bowing to numbers right on par with How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days. The romantic comedy debuted to $23.8 million in 2003 and ended up grossing $105.8 million domestically.
Warner Bros. is hoping that Fool's Gold holds strong for another weekend with Valentine's Day quickly approaching.
"Love is in this air," Warners exec VP of distribution Jeff Goldstein said. "This movie is light entertainment, and we need that. There's too much reality out there."
