Yadayadayada (picture me quickly shaking my head). I don't want to play sides, but I couldn't be more confused about this latest lawsuit concerning Watchmen. It seems that Fox is following the golden rule: When all else fails, sue everybody.
Watchmen Lawsuit: Fox vs Warner Bros
While it's normally websites like CanMag getting threatened by lawsuits over copyright by the studios (don't even get me started on Viacom), two of the biggest parties have finally turned on one another. Though I must admit the timing is somewhat fishy, 20th Century Fox has only recently decided that they own the rights to Watchmen, something Warner Bros. has been looking to complete for some time. The production looks great so far, and nobody wants the adaptation to take a step back. So what does Fox want?
Some skrilla for 'damages.'
Fox's case resides on the fact that they acquired all movie rights to all DC Comics series and screenplays by Charles McKeown and Sam Hamm between 1986 and 1990. Well, it's now 2008, and who actually owns Watchmen has become a complicated subject.
The movie rights to the graphic novel transferred hands a few times between the early '90s and now, but Fox made the necessary arrangements to ensure they kept one of their hands on the action.
In short: Whoever went forward with the project would have to give Fox some kickbacks. Something they have yet to get from Warner Bros.
Be that as it may, doesn't it feel like this lawsuit is coming a little late? Was Fox waiting for Warner Bros. to fully commit -- as in get deep into production -- to the project before making their move?
