Ryan's 2008 Oscar Predictions

No Country for Old Men
While I originally intended to take my time on the 80th Annual Academy Awards by giving each category its own analysis and prediction, summing up my thoughts turns out being way faster.
If you have yet to read my analysis for Best Supporting
Actor, you can read it here.
And the Oscar Goes to...
Best Picture
While I'll openly admit that I didn't get No Country for Old Men during my first viewing -- I thought it should be called A Single Stupid Mistake or Let Him Die of Thirst! -- there is still no doubting that it is a strong adaptation.
If it were up to me, I would hand the award over to There Will be Blood, another great adaptation that also sports a terrific story and title character. The only problem is that everything has been going No Country's way. Since every guild, organization, commune, hostel, brothel and moviegoer made the Coen film their top pick, I guess it is no secret that this film is the favorite to win it.
Prediction: No Country for Old Men
Best Actor
If it were up to me, I'd give it to Johnny Depp just for him taking a shot at singing. If not that, then how about his hair? No?
While the category is full of strong performances, I can't imagine anybody other than Daniel Day Lewis taking the award home. Playing the title character in There Will be Blood, Daniel is terrifying and yet strangely realistic.
If you have any doubt, just know that he has a competition in him, and wants no one else to succeed.
Prediction: Daniel Day Lewis
Best Actress
While I'd love to hand a nod off to Ellen Page, who I absolutely have a crush on, she has got tons of years ahead of her. Well, at least tons of years before she has to worry about a little condition known as alzheimer's. Julie Christie, on the other hand, took a shot at the disease in Away from Her and proved that those affected aren't always the infected.
Prediction: Julie Christie
Best Supporting Actor
While I have a strong feeling that Javier Bardem is going to take it with his role of Anton in No Country for Old Men, I am realing hoping for Philip Seymour Hoffman on this one.
Bardem’s Anton might be scary, but it was Hoffman’s Agent Gust that had us laughing out loud in Charlie Wilson's War as we watched the fall of the Soviet Union. Which was more frightening again?
(Watch for Affleck also, as he is the dark horse in this bracket)
Prediction: Philip Seymour Hoffman
Best Supporting Actress
I hate the winning character! While I have the utmost respect for Cate Blanchett's part in I'm Not There, there is only one role on this list that I will likely never forget. I hate her, I hate her, I hate her! (her meaning the character)
Tilda Swinton should take the award for her role in Michael Clayton. Even at her weakest of moments, one can’t help but hate her malfunctioning corporate entity, Karen Crowder.
Prediction: Tilda Swinton
Best Director(s)
A nobrainer. Joel and Ethan Coen continue to prove that they can excel at any genre, be it a comedy, adaptation or one that follows a hitman with principles.
Prediction: Joel and Ethan Coen for No Country for Old Men
Best Animated Film
I know there are a lot of you out there hoping for Persepolis, but I prefer animated films that still allow for some escape. That being said, Pixar's Ratatouille was one of 2007's glowing gems. Not only did the film look good, but the Pixar creation was a strong reminder of what good storytelling really looks like -- and it's beautiful.
Prediction: Ratatouille
Best Original Screenplay
Because 'surprise hits' don't come from nowhere, might as well give this one to Diablo Cody for Juno.
Prediction: Diablo Cody
Best Adapted Screenplay
I figured this would be another nobrainer, as No Country for Old Men is looking to easily clench this.
Buy the book. Read the first five pages. Start the film. Rinse, repeat.
It doesn't really get any better than that.
Prediction: Joel and Ethan Coen for No Country for Old Men
Well, that's all the main brackets. We'll see if I get around to the others.
