Akira
Warner Bros must be getting a kick out of adapting Speed Racer, as they have begun to comb the shelves to see what else they can make a franchise out of.
It just so happens that Katsuhiro Otomo's six-volume graphic novel Akira doesn't just spell a new adaptation, but a great franchise.
Akira Goes Live Action
Warner Bros has Akira fast tracked for production, as they are hoping to have the first installment in theaters by summer 2009.
Each film will be based on three of the books in Otomo's series. The story takes place in New Manhattan, a metropolis that was rebuilt after being destroyed 31 years earlier.
While the graphic novel has been adapted before -- an animated version came out in 1988 -- this will be the first time the pages splash onto the screen as live-action.
Ruairi Robinson will direct the first installment of Akira off a script by Gary Whitta. The film will serve as Robinson's feature debut.
