I had high hopes for Punisher: War Zone. First off, it had to be better than the first installment and, second, I love the idea of Ray Stevenson playing the title character.
But it looks like I'm going to have to lower my expectations once again. Kurt Sutter, who used to be credited as one of the film's writers, wants his name completely removed from the project. It turns out that the rewrites haven't lived up to his expectations.
Sutter Bashes, Edits and Bails on Punisher: War Zone
Kurt Sutter has posted multiple updates on his personal blog that shares his thoughts and feelings towards Punisher: War Zone. Let's have a taste, shall we?
So I've officially removed my name from credit arbitration for Punisher: Warzone. That's the process where the producers of the movie submit all the drafts and the names of the writers they feel should get credit. Then the WGA decides what writers contributed most and who deserves credit (and the cash bonuses that come with the credit). I took my name off the movie for a few reasons. The obvious reason is because I didn't deserve credit. There was very little of my draft that stayed in the shooting script. The one big one they kept, was the set piece where we see how Russo becomes Jigsaw. It's pretty brutal. Glad they kept that. The other reason I removed my name is because I didn't want credit. My pitch, my vision, for the Punisher franchise was something much different.
Sutter has posted a couple new updates since the one above, and they are all pretty interesting. What it says about the film I cannot say, but it sure doesn't sound good.
