Even the rain could not dampen the glamour of the 80th Annual Academy Awards. Two trends emerged from the gray, windy day. Red was not just the color of the carpet, but the color worn by the most fashion forward stars. Helen Mirren, Ruby Dee, Miley Cyrus, Heidi Klum, Anne Hathaway and Katherine Heigl all chose the color de jour. The other obvious trend was the one shoulder gown. Amy Ryan and Hillary Swank were among the many donning this look.

Now that stylists abound in Hollywood, most of the ladies on the Red Carpet looked amazing. Here are the best of the evening.

2008 Oscar Fashion

Katherine Heigl (27 Dresses) was stunning in a red (Escada), one shoulder creation that narrowed at the waist and flared at the bottom with a train. Her blonde hair was very 1940’s inspired with a side part and curls. She truly understands Hollywood glamour. The best look of the evening.

Amy Adams (Charlie Wilson’s War) was beautiful in a emerald green, sweetheart strapless with mermaid bottom by Proenza Schouler for Valentino. The accessories consisted of yellow gold earrings and an art deco handbag. Her red hair was down with a side part.

Amy Ryan (Gone Baby Gone) chose a Calvin Klein, midnight blue one shoulder Grecian gown. She wore large teardrop dangle earrings. Her hair was coiffed in a side bun.

Jessica Alba (The Eye) pregnant and radiant in an eggplant strapless Marchesa. Her hair was in an up do with braiding.

Jennifer Garner (Juno) shone like a star in a Zac Posen. The black strapless pleated gown had a sequined, ruffled bottom. The dress was accessorized with a diamond choker and earrings. Her hair styled in a loose up do.

Laura Linney (The Savages) looked the part of a best actress nominee in a Michael Kors black staples column dress. A drop necklace completed the look. Her hair was worn down and soft.

Anne Hathaway (Get Smart) chose a red one shoulder gown with floral trim by Marchesa. She also sported incredible diamond drop earrings. Her brunette tresses were held in a high curled ponytail.

Helen Mirren (National Treasure: Book of Secrets) still looked like the queen of Hollywood in a red satin Georges Chakra. The gown was highlighted by crystal floral openwork sleeves.

Nicole Kidman (Australia) barely showed her baby bump in a black satin scoop neck sheath. The neckline was filled with three tiers of lacey diamonds.

Keri Russell (August Rush) in amazing post-baby shape wore a champagne strapless Nina Ricci. Her naturally curly hair was in an up do.

Honorable mentions go to Ruby Dee, Miley Cyrus, Renee Zellweger and Cate Blanchet.

The recipient for most improved is awarded to Jennifer Hudson (Sex and the City: The Movie). The diaphanous white halter dress with black and white crystal trim in a snake pattern was outstanding. Her hair was worn in an up do with a heavy bang. Bravo Jennifer!

And now for those who missed the mark.

Tilda Swinton (Michael Clayton) wore a black floor length sheath by Alber Elbaz for Lanvin. The right side had a long sleeve the left side had no sleeve. Her bright red hair was cropped and not styled. The only thing that could make it worse was she wore absolutely no makeup. The winner of not only the best supporting actress award, but the worst dressed.

Diablo Cody (screenwriter Juno) stood out (not in a good way) in a Dior leopard print flowing gown with skull and cross bone earrings. Her tattooed right bicep only added to “the look”.

Marion Cotillard (La Vie en Rose) chose a Jean Paul Gaultier halter mermaid gown – and I mean mermaid – it had scales. The best actress winner with a dress that was just too gimmicky.

Ellen Page (Juno) - this is difficult because she seems like a sweet 21 year old. But when you are nominated as best actress for an Oscar, there is a stylist somewhere who will help you. The gown was a black tiered flapper look with spaghetti straps. With it she wore a very daytime looking necklace. The coiffure was messy. The whole look just didn’t work.
