Jack Black on Be Kind Rewind

Jack Black doesn't shy away from doing his own stunts, though sometimes insurance companies insist on a double. When working with a director like Michel Gondry though, everything is for real. While remaking many different movies throughout the course of Be Kind Rewind, Black incurred some legitimate injuries.
Danny Glover on Be Kind Rewind
"When I was being magnetized, I think I got a little cut on my finger actually, but no, it wasn’t physically demanding too much," said Black. "The harder part was doing Rush Hour 2. When I had to fall into the garbage it was a little bit of a stunt, because there was no pads underneath the garbage. I was like, ‘Michel, can’t we put some pads underneath that garbage that I’m about to dive into?’ And he says, ‘Non! You’ll see them there’s no time!’ And I did it and sure enough, I hurt my elbow a little bit. I got a scratch on my elbow. [He said,] ‘Don’t be such a babee!’"
The characters of Be Kind Rewind improvise special effects with homemade materials, like Christmas colored tinsel for Ghostbusters streams. While that seems like Jack Black's sense of humor, he does not take credit.
"It was all Michel’s stuff, all of that, the costumes and stuff. I mean, he had help constructing, but they were all his sketches and his ideas, of course."
Black got to play Robocop, a Ghostbuter, Jackie Chan and King Kong himself, but there was one movie icon they could not fit in. "I wanted to do Road Warrior and he said ‘No’ and that was fine. I really liked doing Robocop because that’s my cup of tea. I love Sci-Fi, action. I always wanted to be the Robocop."
Be Kind Rewind
Be Kind Rewind does some dramatic remakes too, like Boyz N The Hood and Driving Miss Daisy. "Well, that was a stretch for me. That was me trying to grow, got on the dress with the worker boots, a really good look. Disguised the voice nicely. Have not heard from the Tandy estate. No one has called to say ‘thumbs up’ or ‘thumbs down’ yet."
The musical actor also improvised his own lyrics to the Ghostbusters theme song, out of necessity. They were not sure while shooting that they'd have the rights to the actual song.
"‘When you’re walking down the street and you see a little ghost. What are you gonna do? Ghost bust ers!’ See, because I know in the original it says, ‘Who are ya gonna call?’ That’s the thing, the hook. But when I said, ‘Whatcha gonna do?’ He said, ‘Non! Too close. Same rhythm. We will get sued.’ So I changed it, ‘What are you gonna do?’ ‘That’s horrible. That’s horrible!’"
Be Kind Rewind is out in theaters now.
