American Idol Season 7 Week 2 Girls Recap
By J Rodgers | Image property of Fox.
American Idol
The girls took their turn at arguably the best decade of music. The 1970s were the time of disco, great rock bands and classic ballads. I was expecting an outstanding week, but there were a lot of questionable song choices.
Here is the rundown from the best to the rest.
American Idol S7 10 Girls Finalist Recap
Brooke White – “You’re so Vain” – beautiful tone, guitar worked in this performance, should consider a country career – Randy said great song choice, referred to the song being about Simon – Paula said perfect song choice – Simon said absolutely loved it, sang it well.
Carly Smithson - “Crazy On You” – perfect song choice, well done – Randy said beginning a little rough, ‘ahright’ – Paula said glad she’s healthy, amazing singer, amazing job – Simon said much better performance than last week, incredible singer, the girl they have to beat, still needs to pick the right song.
Kristy Lee Cook – “You’re No Good” – amazing improvement over last week, fun presentation – Randy said 100% improvement over last week, pretty in tune – Paula said you’re back, good song choice – Simon said huge improvement, got real potential, maybe should go the country route.
Syesha Mercado – “Me and Mr(s). Jones” – nice vocal, sultry, impressive finish – Randy said pick songs for your big voice, give ‘em what you got – Paula said when you power great, go off pitch with soft notes – Simon said indulgent, silly to have done song not written for a girl.
Ramiele Malubay – “Don’t Leave me This Way” – not close to the caliber of last week’s performance, almost boring – Randy said ok for me vocally, not favorite song choice – Paula said one to beat, did not get to perform your magic – Simon said I agree with Paula, much better last week, one of the top 3 singers in the competition, not your best.
Alaina Whitaker – “ Hopelessly Devoted” – some pitch problems – Randy said verses pitchy, not the right song for you – Paula said good job, didn’t think it was as bad as Randy – Simon said I like you, it’s like your Grandmother prepared you, ‘pageanty’, one of the dark horses of the competition.
Asia’h Epperson – “ All By Myself” – a struggle, off key in parts – Randy said difficult song, good job, know she’s sick – Paula said problems in the low notes – Simon said one of the diva songs of all times, not a good enough singer to sing that song.
Kady Malloy – “ Magic Man” – made the song a little more current, nasal – Randy said never got in pitch, didn’t work – Paula said low notes lost it, powered well – Simon said everything you do on film is great, wrong song.
Alexandrea Lushington – “If You Leave me Now” – poor song choice, painful – Randy said so safe, challenge yourself, boring – Paula said stretched it, impressed with you from day one – Simon said struggling, inconsistent in song, boring.
Amanda Overmyer – “Carry on Wayward Son” – bad song choice, even though it is a rock song didn’t showcase her voice – Randy said wasn’t right song choice, too much melody, verses pitchy – Paula said you can dance, do what fits right, not the right song – Simon said contrived, didn’t feel natural or real, ugly song.
Which two guys and two girls will be leaving this week? We’re one step closer to the Top 12. Results show Thursday night on Fox.
