The American Idol juggernaut continues as there were 31 million votes cast last night.
The Top 20 opened the show with a medley of songs from the 1970’s. There were no costumes this week. These were great classics that I would have preferred over some of the songs the contestants chose to perform. Cutie, David Archuleta got the biggest solo (coincidence – I think not). The tweens in the audience were all squealing with excitement.
American Idol Week 2 Results
Now was the time for the first guy to go. Ryan had the back row stand up. One by one he tortured each of them as he told them they were safe. Jason Yeager was ultimately told he would be leaving. He belted “Long Train Running”. Why is it the guys seem to sing better after they get the boot?
The girls got the same treatment as the guys. The back row stood up and one by one were granted safety. Alexandrea Lushington was told it is the end of the journey for her. She sang “If You Leave Me Now”. Once again, the vocals were less pitchy than last night.
Ryan went right back to the girls. He had the front row stand. Kady Malloy and Alaina Whitaker are the last two standing. One was the lowest vote getter the other in the bottom three. Alaina was told she would be going home. She immediately burst into tears and said she couldn’t possibly sing. After many encouraging words from Ryan and Paula, she mustered up the strength to perform. The other girls joined Alaina on stage for her rendition of “Hopelessly Devoted”. She did surprisingly well.
Put March 11th on your calendar. The Top 12 will perform for the first time and Ryan called them the best they’ve ever had. The theme for that evening will be Lennon and McCartney songs. After six seasons of trying, Sony ATV has released the songbook to American Idol. On Wednesday, April 9th Idol Gives Back will return. Among the celebrities participating will be Brad Pitt, Snoop Dogg, Miley Cyrus, Reese Witherspoon, Doughtrey and Carrie Underwood.
The front row of guys was asked to stand. Luke Menard and Robbie Carrico were immediately asked to come center stage. Robbie was the last contestant of the night to be given his walking papers. He was joined by Jason, Alexandrea, and Alaina for a montage of their time on Idol. To wrap up the show, all of the contestants united on the stage as Robbie rocked “Hot Blooded”.
Next week we get one step closer to the Top 12. Guys perform Tuesday – Girls Wednesday – Results Thursday on Fox.
