Highlander: The Source
Okay, I watched Highlander: The Source. It had to be done. I love the Highlander series because it was a great idea that never quite made sense, but they kept trying and each sequel only made it worse. Highlander 2 was in the future for some reason I don't know and that didn't work, so then they brought it back to the present but that still undid everything from the first one, and then they had to incorporate the TV show…
On DVD: Highlander: The Source
Anyway, at least you could forgive the gaps in story for the sake of fun, but I have no idea what's happening in Highlander: The Source. There's some Resident Evil fetish monster in bad Sci-Fi Channel makeup, some European hackers tracking the planets and it's in the future again, but a different future from Highlander 2.
They try. There are lots of swordfights, but they are amped up so it looks cheap. There are more makeup monsters and they have the main monster sign a line of the classic Queen song "Who Wants to Live Forever?". You think that's bad, wait until you hear some guy's cover of "Princes of the Universe." Why even bother?
This is not even Highlander. This is just your typical Sci-Fi Channel movie. I still have nagging questions, like: What if an immortal is split down the middle? Does each half continue to live until the neck is actually cut? What if you're sliced under your shoulders? Does the stump still live until the neck is actually severed? What if a human decapitates you somehow? Who gets the electric light show then?
You don't need to explain where the characters come from. That can and should remain mysterious. It's part of the fun. Just decide if you're really ending it or leaving the series infinite and stick to it.
