Martin Lawrence on College Road Trip

Why isn't Disney selling College Road Trip for the guy on guy action? Donny Osmond kisses Martin Lawrence. Surely the G-rated film will profit from the male heat. Osmond surprised Lawrence with that bit of improv, but the title star went with it.

"Aw man, it was a nice Donny Osmond kiss," joked Lawrence. "All of his fans probably are jealous. It was cool. He always sneaks a kiss on me. I don’t know what it is, but if it works for him, it’s all good. It made for a fun energy. It was a good vibe, a good spirit around the set. I love people who make me laugh and crack up, and I’m trying to hold a face in a scene. I love it."

Another scene stealing costar was a pig who taunts Lawrence's character throughout the film. "I kind of didn’t want to do the whole pig thing but they convinced me a pig would be cute and it did turn out cute. [They said] there are people out there have pigs for pets. Nobody I know. When I saw the film, it worked. First of all, you’re always are going to get upstaged by animals. Kids gravitate towards cute, cuddly things and I didn’t think I was the cute, cuddly thing. I was a little leery because I don’t know no black families that have a pig. Oren [Aviv], the head of Disney showed me a picture of a white family with a pig. I said, 'Oren, brothers don’t have [pigs]. We would have eaten him, man.'"

In the film, the Porter family happens to be African-American, but no issue is made of it. "Every father who has daughters or sons that will go off to college. You can take that as big as you want because it’s a comedy, but the underlying thing is the heart, the meaning of it all. It’s hard to let them go. The subject matter is universal. Any parent, whether you’re black, white or Chinese, if you have a child leaving home, and that’s dear to your heart, you’re having trouble with that, then you can relate to this film. This movie’s for everybody."

Lawrence has been gravitating towards family material, but costarring with Raven-Symone was the ultimate cool factor for his kids. He can even sing the theme song to That's So Raven. "I know that because we keep the TV on the Disney Channel for my daughters. They run the TV in my house. I’ve seen all the Raven shows. It gave me cool points at home when I told them I might be working with Raven. They said, 'You’ve gotta do that. The respect was there from the beginning. I was a fan of hers and she was a fan of mine. The way we come off on film is genuinely the way we started feeling about each other."

College Road Trip opens to theaters on March 7th.
