The Spirit Production Update: Evolution of Ellen Dolan
Miller's fourth production update, "The Evolution of Ellen Dolan", describes how the director had to modify one of the story's important characters.
The myth of The Spirit would be incomplete without Ellen. Our hero's legendary "wandering eye" works only if there is somewhere-someONE, from which it wanders. Ellen is the woman Denny Colt would have married, had he not been murdered. Ellen's love anchors him, tethers him to the civilian world, the world of the living. She is his fulcrum, and the romantic lead of his life, if not his every particular adventure. He is, after all, a bit of a rascal.
The only problem with Ms. Dolan is that she was, with all respect to my beloved mentor, a lousy character...
