Sam Raimi has become quite the popular guy with Paramount Pictures. After joining up with the studio for Monster Zoo, the director is now in talks with the studio to get Jack Ryan another mission.
Sam Raimi to Direct Jack Ryan Franchise Revival
If the deal between Raimi and Paramount works out, the guy who brought us the Spider-Man franchise will be expected to direct multiple Jack Ryan installments. So what have we seen so far?
Alec Baldwin got Jack Ryan off the ground with 1990's The Hunt for Red October. He was, however, quickly replaced by Harrison Ford after Baldwin figured Broadway was the better option. Ford played Jack Ryan in 1992's Patriot Games and 1994's Clear and Present Danger. To knock off some years, Ford was replaced by Ben Affleck for 2002's The Sum of All Fears. The four films grossed $781.5 million worldwide.
While Clancy is completing another Ryan novel, the studio hasn't read it and has therefore not decided if it will use the new book or come up with an original story. Paramount controls rights to the Ryan character, and gets first look at the new novel.
Raimi's pairing with Paramount seems like a perfect fit. Raimi is drawn to the character while Paramount respects the director's ability to create a franchise. Just don't let him direct the third installment.
