The helmer who brought us Black Snake Moan and Hustle & Flow is looking to team up with Paramount Vantage to adapt Sudhir Venkatesh's Gang Leader for a Day.

Brewer to Direct Gang Leader for a Day

Since a Paramount arm helped distribute both Black Snake Moan and Hustle & Flow, it comes as no surprise that Paramount Vantage is looking to Craig Brewer to direct Gang Leader for a Day off a script by Sopranos scribe Michael Caleo.

Venkatesh is a Columbia U. professor, and Gang Leader for a Day: A Rogue Sociologist Takes to the Streets recounted years he spent chronicling a crack-dealing gang in Chicago for a research project. He befriended the Black Kings and their leader and was invited to observe close up. Venkatesh found a close-knit group whose corporate culture was much like that of a successful legitimate business. Venkatesh got so close in fact that he was given the job of calling the shots of the criminal enterprise for a day.

He first wrote of his experience in Freakonomics, the Steven D. Levitt and Stephen J. Dubner book that is currently being turned into a documentary.
