Rob Marshall's cast for the adaptation of the Tony-winning Broadway musical, Nine, is about to become a whole bunch more ensemble. With Javier Bardem, Penelope Cruz, Marion Cotillard and Sophia Loren already onboard, the production is in final talks to add both Nicole Kidman and Judi Dench.
Nicole Kidman and Judi Dench in Negotiations for Nine
Since adaptations have been a hit this week, I might as well point out that Nine will actually be an adaptation of an adaptation. The 1982 show was itself an adaptation of Federico Fellini's autobiographical opus 8 1/2.
The story revolves around a film director (Bardem) juggling the demands of several women in his life.
We've all seen Nicole Kidman in Moulin Rouge, so we know she's ready to handle such a part. What comes as a surprise is Dench's extensive musical theater experience. She played Sally Bowles in the original London production of "Cabaret" in 1968, and won the 1995 Olivier Award for best actress in a musical in a revival of Stephen Sondheim's "A Little Night Music."
Nine was originally expected to begin photography March but was postponed when the late writer-director Anthony Minghella couldn't rework Michael Tolkin's screenplay thanks to the WGA strike. This worked out for Kidman, however, who needed the maternity leave for a baby due this summer.
