American Idol
Ryan opened the show looking very GQ again. He explained tonight would be performances – tomorrow night Idol Gives Back – results on Thursday.
The theme of the night was inspirational songs. This would give our Elite 8 a wide range from which to choose. But it turned out to be a tough night and overall pretty disappointing.
Let’s break it down from the best to the rest.
Season 7 Week 8 Top 8 American Idol Recap
David Archuleta – “Angels” by Robbie Williams – self accompanied on piano, perfect song choice, solid performance – Randy said his hottest moment of the season, loved it, crazy hot – Paula said that sums it up for me, fantastic – Simon said best song choice of the night, ‘nasaly’, end part better than the beginning.
Kristy Lee Cook – “Anyway” by Martina McBride – who would ever have thought I would give her a #2 spot but she is at her best when singing country, her best performance to date, quite good – Randy said couple little pitchy moments, loved it – Paula said you outdid yourself, your best by far, excellent – Simon said very, very good indeed, with broad range of songs you picked one to show who you are, appealed to your audience, looked like a star tonight, smart choice of song.
Jason Castro – “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” by Israel Kamakawiwo’ole – self accompanied on ukulele, clear, gutsy choice of songs, 2nd only to his “Halleluiah” performance – Randy said Jason is back in the hunt, blazin’ molten hot – Paula said perfect song, great job, love that version – Simon said fantastic.
Syesha Mercado – “I Believe” by Fantasia – one of her better performances, went Mariah at the end – Randy said ok, didn’t find special connection – Paula said made it your own, hands down one of your shining nights – Simon said sang it well, lacked big wave of emotion.
Brooke White – “You’ve Got a Friend” by Carole King – couple pitch problems, song suited her, sweet – Randy said ok, not her best performance – Paula said definitive, I love you – Simon said pleasant like a walk in the park, nice.
Michael Johns – “Dream On” by Aerosmith – what’s up with the ascot again, a little screechy in spots, not as good as last week not even close – Randy said pretty good song, pitch problems, ‘ahright’ – Paula said perfect song, sound as good as you look, on high notes her Chihuahuas will join you on stage – Simon said very good performance, don’t like impersonation of a rock star, a little bit ‘wanna be’.
David Cook – “Innocent” by Our Lady Peace – questionable song choice, has been so consistently good this was just not a good performance, felt a disconnect – Randy said not one of your strongest weeks – Paula said so well defined as being whole package – Simon said didn’t like this performance, pompous, not anywhere near as good as the last two weeks.
Carly Smithson – “Show Must Go On” by Queen – did not like song choice, ‘screamy’, just not good – Randy said little pitchy, ok, didn’t hit mark – Paula said voice pretty perfect, no connection – Simon said look good, unusual choice of song, over sang it, lost control of song, angry performance, might be in trouble after tonight.
I have fear for some of the former frontrunners. Who will survive to be a member of the Magnificent 7? Wednesday night Idol Gives Back. Results show Thursday night on Fox.
