Never assume. Last season on Idol Gives Back Week the producers chose to be “charitable” and not eliminate a contestant. We think the same goes for this season – not.
The evening opened with clips from Idol Gives Back. Ryan told us they have raised $60 million dollars thus far (not up to the $76 million last season), but monies are still being collected online at www.Americanidol.com.
Our Elite 8 performed “Shout to the Lord” with a gospel choir. Next there was a video montage of celebrities lip sinking “I’m a Believer” by The Monkees.
American Idol: Top 9 Elimination Round
Ryan reported the votes totaled 31 million, the highest number this season. He pointed out the sofa of safety and the stools of shame. We think all our contestants will be sent to the sofa – right – maybe one by one for a little drama? Brook White was the first up and sent to the sofa. Next David Cook was deemed safe. (Whew, I was a little concerned about him this week.) David Archuleta was out next – we know his is safe.
Then there is a break in the action as we saw a report from Forrest Whitaker on the orphans in Angola – heartbreaking.
Our Season 6 Idol, Jordin Sparks performed her hit “No Air” with Chris Brown. Ryan presented her with commemorative plaques for: 1 million downloads of “No Air”, gold sales for her self- titled CD, and 1 million downloads of “Tattoo”.
We then viewed the Ford music video of the week.
Jason Castro was the next contestant to be sent to the sofa. Not a surprise after his effort this week. Kristy Lee Cook, who has been in the bottom three a lot lately, was also granted safety. See they aren’t sending anyone home this week just as we thought – not so much. In another Season 7 shocker, Ryan told us Syesha Mercado, Michael Johns and Carly Smithson were the bottom three. And in what I thought was a very cruel and cutting manor (not cool Idol producers), Ryan blurted to Michael Johns he would be going home. The look on Michael’s face was that of pure shock. This was his first week in the bottom three. Michael rocked his farewell performance of “Dream On”.
It is really going to be tough from here on. Next week the Magnificent 7 will vie for your votes and try to become the next American Idol. Mariah Carey will be our mentor – could be difficult for the dudes. Performance Tuesday – Results Wednesday on Fox.
