American Idol Week 9 Top 7 Recap

American Idol
Ryan opened the show wearing a very retro 1960’s suit and tie. He sported an interesting hair style, borderline faux hawk. We see an audience shot of Minnie Driver and Desperate Housewife Teri Hatcher with daughter, Emerson Rose.
The evening started with a musical bio of this week’s mentor, Mariah Carey. She burst onto the scene in 1990 with her self-titled debut album. She has sold 160 million albums worldwide. Carey also earned five Grammies and passed Elvis Presley as the solo artist with the most #1 hits. Her album released today, E=mc2, contains the #1 Billboard single “Touch my Body”. Mariah has never looked better.
Let’s get down to the nitty gritty and rate our Magnificent 7 from the best to the rest.
Season 7 Week 9 Top 7 American Idol Recap
David Cook – “Always Be my Baby” from the 1995 album Daydream – Mariah said surprised at song choice, it would be a hit for him, stands the test of time, interesting male perspective – gave me goose bumps, made it his own, incredible – Randy said ready to make album, hot recording artist, most brilliant performance (Randy’s first standing ovation of the season) – Paula said awesome, could be on a movie soundtrack right now, you’re it, you definitely have it – Simon said coming out of Karaoke hell into a breath of fresh air, original, daring, stood out by a mile, side of great potential is an artist who takes risks – after his performance Ryan called attention to the tears in his eyes and the camera panned to his terminally ill brother, Adam.
David Archuleta – “When You Believe” from the 2001 #1s album – Mariah said proud of him, his singing is beautiful, suggested using ‘false’ – well done, soulful, one of my favorite performances from him – Randy said you can sing anything, that was the bomb – Paula said I know Mariah is proud – Simon said very, very good, set the bench mark, performed it very well.
Syesha Mercado – “Vanishing” from the1990 album Mariah Carey – Mariah said good choice of song, amazing, cool and composed – not a very well known song, but sang it beautifully, one of her best weeks – Randy said toughest song of the night, good job, couple pitchy moments – Paula said smart to pick song not many people know so can’t make comparison, tonight masterful – Simon said technically good, run a risk picking songs nobody knows.
Jason Castro – “I Don’t Wanna Cry” from the 1990 album Mariah Carey – Mariah said think he’s unique, expressing and singing to people’s hearts – nicely done, sweet - Randy said didn’t really love it, weird for me like a luau – Paula said I’d love to be at that luau, confident – Simon said I agree with Paula, wasn’t the best vocal, cool version, guys won the night.
Kristy Lee Cook – “Forever” from the 1995 Daydream album – Mariah said delivered it well, gave her goose bumps –took it country, couple iffy notes at beginning then really good – Randy said not amazing, couple bad notes at beginning stepped up at the end – Paula said stepped it up, blown away, how the arrangement done could be a country hit – Simon said managed with what you could, whiney at times, wasn’t great.
Carly Smithson – “Without You” from the 1993 album Music Box – Mariah said powerful voice, doing an amazing job, sounds good – pretty, seemed to hit all the notes, lacked connection, something just not right about it – Randy said I like you challenged yourself, pretty good, beginning loosey goosey from middle on better – Paula said showed vocal restraint then soared, made it your own – Simon said (remember he wanted her to sing this song) I don’t think you pulled it off, ok version.
Brooke White – “Hero” from the 1993 album Music Box – Mariah said meant words from heart, good choice – self accompanied on piano, very Carole King, looked nervous, ok – Randy said bridge got me, pretty good, liked singer/songwriter thing – Paula said every ounce of you authentic, unplugged version brave, few off notes (was Paula more unusual than usual tonight?) – Simon said a bit like ordering a hamburger and only getting bun, voice not strong enough to carry song.
Well, I take back what I said about Mariah Carey week being an advantage to the girls – my bad - guys had a much better showing. Will the voting audience agree? Results Wednesday night on Fox.
