American Idol American Idol
Our Spectacular 6 has their work cut out for them as the music of Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber may prove the toughest night of the season.

Ryan (hair still in the almost faux hawk) opened the show and pronounced it to be Earth Day. He shared with us AI would be using ‘green power’ for the finale which is only four weeks away. Ryan acknowledged our contestants would be out of their comfort zone and the orchestra had been expanded for the music of Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber.

Next, we viewed the video diary of the life of Andrew Lloyd Webber. He started composing at age 7. He began his collaboration with Tim Rice at age 17. Our Idol contestants were flown to Las Vegas to meet with Webber at The Venetian Hotel. Webber’s “Phantom of the Opera”, is in permanent residence there. Lord ALW told us he wants to help make the songs work for our Idols. I truly believe he has been one of the most helpful mentors.

Now to the task at hand – let’s break it down from the best to the rest.

Season 7 Week 10 Top 6 American Idol Recap

David Cook – “Music of the Night” from Phantom of the Opera – Lord ALW said most sexy song I’ve ever written, if he comes out of himself maybe it’ll work – did more than justice to my favorite Broadway song, sang with his eyes, a ‘goose bump worthy’ performance – Randy said amazing vocal performance, molten hot, unbelievable – Paula said proved well rounded, fantastic – Simon said made the most of the song, too rounded off (what?).

Syesha Mercado – “One Rock and Roll Too Many” from Starlight Express – Lord ALW said could bring the house down – fun, musical theater is definitely her thing, nice performance – Randy said best performance to date, could be a Broadway star – Paula said your happy place – Simon said very sexy, one of your strongest performances, masses of personality, Randy is right.

Carly Smithson – “Jesus Christ Superstar” from Jesus Christ Superstar – Lord ALW had her change songs from “All I Ask of You” from Phantom of the Opera, told her to live it, Irish eyes smiling – got to be a true rocker chick, too much band and background singing, last note killer, hope middle America doesn’t have problem with song – Randy said definitely good, not the best, like the outfit – Paula said love what you did with it – Simon said got ‘shouty’ in the middle, one of my favorite performances of the night.

David Archuleta – “Think of Me” from Phantom of the Opera – Lord ALW said open your eyes when you sing, real musical soul – made it into a pop version, some things should not be messed with, still well sung, what’s with the girls getting to come up on stage and hug him, producers should not show favoritism – Randy said own personality, the bomb, the one to beat – Paula said perfect, turned into pop ballad – Simon said pleasant, one of your weakest performances, forgettable.

Brooke White – “You Must Love Me” from Evita (the movie) – Lord ALW said a wonderful, natural actress – had to start over, nervous and shaking, voice pretty though – Randy said parts that were good, believe what you’re saying, vocally tough – Paula said (Paula held her tongue and thought long and hard before commenting) you must never start and stop, loved you didn’t overact – Simon said so dramatic, voice straining from trying to remember song, you’ll be disappointed when you watch it back.

Jason Castro – “Memory” from Cats – Lord ALW said wouldn’t be surprised if he ignores what I told him and does quite a good job – Lord Webber you couldn’t be more wrong, yikes, pitch problems, not a strong enough voice for this song – Randy said train wreck, not your thing, too big of song – Paula said very wise choice, further identifies unique being (huh?), pop ballad – Simon said longest two minutes of your life, miserable, struggle, not your style.

Are we prepared for what could happen from here on out? The members of our Top 6 each have a devoted fan base – there will be tears. Who will be leaving us tomorrow night and who will move on to the Fab 5? Results Wednesday night on Fox.
