Though the 2008 summer box office is short of any pirates, ogres or web-slinging heroes, don't count it out just yet.

May 2008 Looking to Iron Man and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

Variety has released a great report predicting that May 2008 will play host to a box office worth talking about. So strong in fact, that it will likely take down the same frame in 2007. Why so optimistic you ask? It all comes down to potential.

First off, last May was somewhat weak with most studios saving their tentpoles for June and July. This year, eh, not so much. Get ready for a busy May, as we have four big tentpoles coming.

Iron Man (May 2nd)
Talk about a summer launch. Fans have been anxious for Iron Man ever since Robert Downey Jr.'s casting announcement and low and behold, the film's marketing has yet to disappoint.

Speed Racer (May 9th)
If we have three things to go on...
1. Positive early screening reports.
2. Visuals, visuals, visuals. This film was made for the hotter season.
3. The Wachowski Brothers. Say what you will, but these guys know how to make entertaining movies.

The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian (May 16th)
The trailers for The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe wowed me, but the film didn't. I was not to be fooled again! But, here we are, and Prince Caspian looks effin' awesome.

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (May 22nd)
We were sold when we saw the first two words in the title. But now early screening reports claim that this is the best Indy sequel yet. What are we to do?

With both men and teens satisfied, there is some room still left in May for chick flicks.

Made of Honor (May 2nd)
McDreamy should be able to pull in the ladies, who will pull in their men. I'm conflicted, as it's Kevin McKidd's character I want to see come out ahead.

What Happens in Vegas (May 16th)
Teaming Cameron Diaz and Ashton Kutcher does show promise, and the whole idea of Vegas should find a soft spot with some moviegoers.

Sex and the City (May 30)
A hit television series for women is likely to become a hit film for women.

Best yet, none of the films have a '2', '3' or '4' tagged at the end of 'em.

Iron Man opens to theaters on May 2nd.
