Justin Timberlake Takes on The Love Guru

Justin Timberlake doesn't need to act. He makes a decent enough living as a singer but he has the acting bug, so he takes breaks from touring and recording. His latest role is in the movie The Love Guru, adding comic villain to his diverse resume of roles.

“[It's] just the material," said Timberlake. "Also, who is going to tell the story, who is the director, who is involved and who is going to be there to help tell the story? Alpha Dog for instance, as depressing as it was, I thought it was a story that should be told. I met Craig Brewer before Black Snake Moan and knew that an opportunity like this was great, because I think he is so talented. I loved the story, as sketchy as it was. I guess you could say it’s exploitive, but I felt it was proper to tell that story. It’s usually about the material. This is my first comedy, so picking a comedy to do, it was about being laugh-out-loud funny. How do you say no to that?”
His character in The Love Guru is Jacque "Le Coq" Grande, a French Canadian hockey player with a huge penis. Star and writer Mike Myers thought of Timberlake after seeing his hosting gig on Saturday Night Live.

"I didn’t know that. I mean, he called up and said, 'I’ve got this character and I think you’re awesome.' And I thought it was one of my friends. I was like, 'All right, stop.' And he’s like, 'No, it’s Mike,' and he sent me the script. I read the script and I called him back and he talked about how the character would look and I threw some ideas at him, and he threw some ideas at me, and it just really became a collaborative process. Even after accepting the role and being cast, showing up, we still improv'ed so much to get the specifics of the character down."
The accent, a moustache, a Member's Only jacket and singing Celine Dion are pretty broad characteristics to play. "Well, Mike coming from Saturday Night Live as well, I think there’s such an element of that in his style of comedy. Isn’t cool that there’s a Mike Myers style of comedy? I mean, I was talking about that with someone. That’s sort of what makes him a legend already to me is he’s already carved out his own nut. That’s what the greats do, but I think it’s important to know how you fit in, and I knew exactly. After doing SNL and knowing Mike, you know exactly what you’re getting into."
The Love Guru may be the only time Timberlake does not end up with the girl, in movies, videos or real life. It was all part of the fun of being the villain.
"I’ve enjoyed playing the antagonist and it’s probably because I’m always the main character in music. It’s always about me."
The Love Guru is out in theaters now.
