Gangs of New York
You know, I was not thrilled by Gangs of New York when I saw it. It was a visual spectacle, but I just found it hard to follow. Now on Blu Ray, it looks so spectacular I might give it a second chance. At least I'll be marveling at visuals if I still can't follow the plot.
Resolute Gangs of New York
Just scanning through key scenes, it seems any still shot of old New York is full of details. When the camera moves, the details fade, but that may just be the nature of motion.
The snowy opening battle is bright and sharp, turning to red dirt in the summer (much more noticeable when you're skipping ahead). The blue stripes of Bill the Butcher's army really stand out in battle, and Bill's eye glistens.
You'll see all the detail of the film's lavish sets at some point. There are different lights, from fire red to winter grey and summer. Battle scenes are crisp with bright, shiny blood.
