Thomas Kretschmann On Wanted

Wanted
When hit men can bend bullets, it takes a pretty tough cookie to send them on the run. Thomas Kretschmann plays the guy chasing our heroes. That's quite a tall order for an actor.
Kretschmann Wanted's Top Assassin
"Well, it’s like, it’s the best assassin in the world," said Kretschmann. "You go like, 'All right, um Angelina Jolie is playing another assassin I’ve just seen in Mr. & Mrs. Smith. What the f*ck am I doing now?" So now basically I make sure that I look good, and I look like I know what I’m doing, and I don’t want to think twice when I’m shooting if I hold the gun right or wrong. It was a good opportunity to learn something new so I did excessive gun training and now I know everything about guns."
Kretschmann does not have many lines in the film, so he had to convey everything physically. "I like not to talk actually in films. I’m not a big talker. Sometimes, if I’m getting into it, I am. For an actor, I think it’s more interesting to express yourself without talking. I personally like that. Also like regular scripts, where I have like, normal dialogue, I try to cut out as much as I can. Everything, basically what I can play, I don’t like to say. And if a director knows what he’s doing, they get along with that. They seem to like it."
Wanted
With the film's unique visual style, Kretschmann could only imagine what it would look like on screen. "You have an idea, and you always have an idea, right? But mostly, your idea is more glorious than the result. This time, it was the first time the other way around. It was the first time I walked out of a film and thought, like, wow I didn’t expect that. It’s so much better and so much cooler as what I though. I think it’s the favorite action film I ever saw."
No, Kretschmann was in King Kong and he means no disrespect to Peter Jackson. Here is the difference. "King Kong I knew what’s happening, I knew everything, I knew it’s state of the art in CGI but still if you’re on the set and you look at it, it’s not really perfect. For the audience, it might be, I cannot tell. Like if I see other films, I don’t see the problems the people have, the one’s who were involved. I just see the film and it works for me or not. So, King Kong worked for me after all, I think it’s a great film and I loved the film, but I can see the stitches because I was there. Here, I don’t see the stitches."
Wanted opens to theaters on June 27th.
