WALL•E stars two robots, though there are a few speaking parts. The humans who are floating around in space waiting for earth to become habitable again get to play supporting roles. Their captain is voiced by Jeff Garlin. The frequently R-rated Curb Your Enthusiasm star was happy to tone it down for kids.

Garlin the Captain of WALL•E

"I got involved where Andrew Stanton called me and asked me to do the part," said Garlin. "Before he asked me he said, ‘Can you come up to Pixar and I want to do a presentation for you and then you can see if you want to do it.’ As if like, ‘Yeah, the guy who wrote and directed Finding Nemo who does movies at Pixar wants me to be one of the stars of his new movie, yeah, let’s see what this presentation’s all about.’ No way, I was so thrilled."

The captain does sound remarkably like Jeff Garlin. "In terms of developing the voice, it’s just me. I just said it. I generally as an actor, unless I’m playing such a specific character, I just do variations of myself. Everyone does what they do, which some people are great at that. Some people can’t do that, some people only can do characters but can’t be themselves. I’m very comfortable playing variations of myself."

Humans in the future have devolved into boneless blobs, thanks to lifetimes of computer assistance with even basic functions. Garlin barely even knew about this, because he didn't want any spoilers. "I saw sketches and such but I made a real conscious choice during the whole process, including looping, to not watch at all because I wanted to see the movie clean. Besides seeing a drawing, when I saw the movie like three weeks ago, I had no idea what I was in for. When you loop, which is where you go in after it’s done because they need you to re-say a line a certain way because they need you to match what’s on the screen, I know my own technique for looping with live action so I applied it to animation. I never watch. I’ll watch the live action sometimes. I’ll watch for a second or two, and then when we do it I’m not trying to match what I’m saying, I just pick up the rhythm. It’s all rhythms. So with the animation I especially didn’t watch because I just pick up the rhythm that’s all. I’m a big bowl of naturalism. I play variations on myself. I don’t really think about things too much. I just do it."

Now that he is in the Pixar fold, Garlin was impressed by their artistic integrity within a lucrative industry. "Pixar works on their stories harder than any place I’ve ever been around. Movies you go on, they are changing pages constantly while you’re filming. They will not move forward unless they’ve got the story right. Also they’ve got great constructive criticism amongst each other. Lastly, they are really kind to one another, so I’ve seen an instance where it’s almost like Utopia. They really have their own Utopia. They really do. It’s their own world where they take what they do very seriously and they work really, really, really hard at it. I find that other studios, laziness runs amok and dollar signs run amok. Not that Pixar movies aren’t into making [money]. Disney and Pixar want to make a ton of money. Everyone does with all the stuff they do. But they’re just concerned with making a great movie and the money will either follow or it won’t. You can’t control it. Why not just make a great movie?"

WALL•E is out in theaters now.
