Funny Games
I guess there's no Blu Ray for Warner's indie label yet, so I have to settle for upconverting the standard DVD of Funny Games. The film appears extra grainy, perhaps because it is so bright.
Funny Games on DVD
The film is very white and washed out. Even blues are basically white. Naomi Watt's pristine porcelain skin fits in well with this scheme. It gets dark at night and the grain closes together. It's still not a colorful film, but it gets sharper.
Some details come through the conversion process. The fuzz on the intruders' white gloves seems distinct. The marble tile shines in brief moments. But once you get into Funny Games's sick plot, you probably won't be paying attention to HDTV.
