Hellboy II: The Golden Army
Second time's a charm when it comes to Guillermo Del Toro's Hellboy II: The Golden Army. Not feeling any pressure from Eddie Murphy's Meet Dave, Hellboy II debuted to an estimated $35.9 million.
Hellboy's Red Makes Green
While Ron Perlman's Hellboy lead to success for Universal Pictures, 20th Century Fox is trying to see where they went wrong with Meet Dave. Debuting to only $5.3 million, the film is one of the worst openings ever for an Eddie Murphy pic.
Though audiences and critics are still trying to decide what they think of Hancock, the film showed plenty of punch in its second weekend with $33 million.
Taking advantage of the third dimension, Journey to the Center of the Earth was able to earn an estimated $20.6 million during its opening bow. The film did well enough to take the #3 spot over the weekend, but it barely beat out WALL•E.
Pixar's latest toon entered its third weekend with a respectable decline of 43%. The animation pulled in another $18.5 million, bringing its total cume to $162.8 million.
Not to rub salt on Fox's wound, but Meet Dave does make for an interesting topic. While the overall box office proved that audiences were making their way to the theaters this weekend, nobody wanted to see Meet Dave. Even with the film's "B" CinemaScore, Fox's film and ad campaign could not create much of a draw.
Which brings up the age old question: Are moviegoers sick of Murphy or stupid films?
