Monkeys are plenty funny on their own, but when they are the stars of a computer animated movie, they still have to have a funny voice. Andy Samberg plays Ham III, the grandson of the original astronaut simian in Space Chimps. He joins Mike Myers and Eddie Murphy in the ranks of Saturday Night Live stars with animated franchises.
Andy Samberg One of the Space Chimps
"Eddie Murphy and Mike Myers and now me," Samberg pondered. "Yeah, that sounds about right I guess. Ask me again when we're doing Space Chimps 12 I guess."
Voice work was a natural fit for Samberg. "It's generally what I'm doing at home anyway. There just happen to me mics rolling. I walk around the house making chimp noises and creaming, 'Look out! It's headed right for us!' Stuff like that."
Space Chimps
Space Chimps follows Laser Cats in Samberg's saga of sci-fi animals. Surely there is a trilogy there. "I don't know but certainly there will be one. I definitely have a sci-fi fetish I guess. You can use the word fetish when referring to Space Chimps, right?"
It goes back to Samberg's childhood. "I wanted to live in Star Wars world pretty much. That’s why you have a light saber, and of course I had one because I belonged to the Star Wars fan club. So get your Bantha Tracks magazine and you're set."
Space Chimps opens against The Dark Knight and Samberg has a few words for the competition. "Good luck, Dark Knight. I mean, I don't wanna sound cocky but let me just put it this way: I don't know anyone that's excited to see The Dark Knight."
