We knew The Dark Knight was looking good after it's record-breaking Friday loot of $67.8 million. Of that, $18.5 million came from the early midnight showings, beating out the record of $16.9 million for Revenge of the Sith. So that makes two records. But why not the holy trifecta?

Finishing off the weekend, the estimated box office for The Dark Knight is closing in on $155.4 million, making it the biggest opening ever for a three-day weekend.

Dark Knight Sends Spidey Packing

Spider-Man 3 was only able to hold the record for a year. After earning $151.1 million back in May of 2007, the record-holder couldn't stand up to The Dark Knight; making Batman the most successful superhero to ever grace the silverscreen.

For audiences who were looking for something less violent, Mamma Mia! filled in. The musical scored an impressive $27.6 million during its opening bow. The film's impressive hull has allowed it to earn the title of best opening for a musical, barely beating out Hairspray's $27.5 million during the same weekend last year.

But back to The Dark Knight. The film has scored such an impressive opening that it could very well beat out the entire box office gross for Batman Begins by the week's end. The installment that re-launched the franchise earned $205 million domestically.
