The Dark Knight
Almost to $200 million! Thanks to a super-strong Monday for The Dark Knight, which raked in another $24.6 million domestically, the Batman sequel came within $18 million of the $200 million mark in only four days.
Dark Knight Closes on $200 Million
With those types of numbers we are expecting The Dark Knight to cross the $200 million mark today. If the film can do $24.6 million yesterday, then it should come close to $18 million today.
With tickets still selling during the week, The Dark Knight should easily destroy the current record-holder for best opening week. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest holds the title with $196 million in its first seven days. At this rate TDK will earn north of $230 million by the end of the week, making that at least four records taken down by the film.
After the film's strong rollout, studio distribution chiefs have adjusted their expectations of the film and now predict the tentpole to gross north of $400 million domestically.
Thanks once again to both The Dark Knight and Mamma Mia! (for chipping in), Monday's overall gross of $37.7 million was the best ever for a non-holiday.
